I've never liked to drink water. To me it's boring and flat and just plain blah. Despite my background in nutrition and simply knowing better, I pretty much subsist on Diet Coke along with the occasional diet rootbeer, diet orange soda, and coffee or tea in the winter. Only when it's super warm out and I've just done a long workout do I actually want water.
Since I met my boyfriend, he's always commented on my not-so-healthy beverage choices and urged me to drink more water. Then recently when we needed to buy a refrigerator, I claimed that if we bought the kind with the through-the-door water and ice dispenser, I'd without a doubt be drinking water all the time. Honestly, I had good intentions ... or at least my intentions sounded good at the time, but aside from getting a few ice cubes to chill down my diet sodas, I hadn't used it at all.
My boyfriend, upon seeing me reach for my umpteenth Diet Coke a little while back, asked when the last time I had any water was. "I don't recall" was apparently the wrong answer. I agreed to a water challenge - the first week I'd have to have just one 8 oz. glass of water a day, the second week, two glasses, and so on until I was at 4 - 8 oz. glasses a day. I could then drink as much diet soda as I wanted after that, but at least I'd be getting a decent amount of water in each day.
I failed my challenge ... miserably. I had less than 8 oz. in a week, far short of my 8 oz. a day goal. I tried to reason (*cough*weasel*cough*) my way out of what was coming next. I argued that the main ingredient in Diet Coke is water, albeit carbonated and blended ever so deliciously with other items such as caramel color, aspartame, citric acid, and errrmm ... caffeine. Drat.
So then I offered to replace the majority of my Diet Coke consumption with non-caffeinated sodas, but he said soda is soda and water is water. The fridge comes with through-the-door water, not Diet Coke, not Diet Sprite, or any other kind of soda. (Personally, I think refrigerators should come with through-the-door Diet Coke. Brilliant!)
I got a very warm reminder after my bath to do better this coming week. I also drank a 16 oz glass of water as a show of good faith.
I'm still trying to sort through what can be categorized as water aside from the obvious pure H2O. So far I know that:
Water = Water
Water w/ Lemon = Water
Propel Fitness Water = Water
Water w/ Lemon and a packet of Equal = Questionable
Water w/ Yummy Flavors and Carbonation = Soda, Not Water
Water heated and filtered through finely ground roasted Arabica beans gathered from the hillsides of Columbia = Not A Chance :-/

I also used to hate water, but heavy exercise changed that. I started doing all of my cardio with only water at my side, and necessity bred adaptation. i know you work out a lot, so if you go on one of your runs and only take water with you, your body's response to it might override your tongue's rejection. If not....keep a pillow handy.
I have the same problem, Pixie. Caffeine free Diet Coke is the staple, and water comes in a distant 2nd...or third....or furhter down the number chart. (Diet Root Beer--or at least A&W Diet Root Beer--is also caffeine free, so if caffeine is an issue, there's an alternative to always going with Diet Coke).
Lately,--well, not to break the habit; let's say supplement--I've been stocking up on DeSani Plus. They call it "vitamin enhanced flavored water", but I'd say they're really reaching on the "vitamin enhanced" part. The only vitamin that's added is vitamin E, and then it's only 10% RDA. It also has Zinc, also only 10% RDA.
But I'm going to call it "water" and try to drink more of it.

I sympathize, sweetie. My one weakness (since I don't smoke, never drink booze, and don't pop, sniff, or shoot up any illicit drugs) is the 2-3 liters of Pepsi and Dr Pepper I drink DAILY. At least you've managed to train your taste buds to handle diet soda. Aside from diet root beer, all diet drinks taste like motor oil on my palette.
I recommend grape-flavored Propel and grape-flavored Fruit-2-0. These DO count as water and taste far better than whatever's coming out of that tap.
(sigh) As long as I live, I will never tire of the sight of your lovely bottom painted red from spanking and accented by flannel pjs. More breath-taking than the Grand Canyon or any sunset. (HUGS)
It’s comforting to know that I’m not the only one with a Pepsi Cola fetish. (My average weekly consumption is 12 litres.)
I once mentioned my Pepsi intake during a dinner party, only to be roundly rebuked by the other guests – one of them told me that cola is also an effective household cleaner.
I was the only one at the table who wasn’t drinking alcohol, though, and I thought it better to keep quiet about my previous chronicle of wine and whisky abuse.
I haven’t drank any alcohol at all since mid 2005. For some, there are worse things than cola, coffee and soda.

Not sure if this would work for you or not, but the best way I found to get the water down is to simply always have it near. Right now, I buy bottled water and usually have one sitting near my computer, on the hutch, on the nightstand, on the kitchen counter. Even if I am not *thirsty*, when I see the bottle I make a conscious decision to pick it up and take a huge swig, maybe two. I might drink Diet pepsi in between, but as I pass those water bottles throughout the house, I make a deliberate choice to pick it up and take a drink. :)

Well, Pixie...it sounds like more water for you. In fact, personally, I think you should get a spanking each day for however many glasses short you are that day.
Or at the very least, a set number of spanks per glass.
I'm on your side Pixie! I have half empty water bottles everywhere (4 in my bedroom at this very moment). The flavor of soda is yummy. The flavor of water is nothing! Why consume something that tastes like nothing?! Besides, lots of foods we eat everyday already contain a lot of water. I'll drink it if I work out, but other than that, no one can make me! Like the old ad says, "Have a coke and a smile.":)

You can vary citrus additions as well. I like water with a little bit of freshly squeezed orange juice.
(That said, I shouldn't really comment because I've almost become addicted to Red Bull...)
Very red bottom there, Pixie. 8oz of water in ~a week~ though... after your promise to try to drink more water made it well deserved. We like to add lemon to our water... the plastic lemon thing with the lemon juice in it works great. It takes like two seconds to add lemon that way. Can also cut a lemon up and freeze it, then add it to you water. Lime works too.
You can also drink water from a straw (it helps)... add lots of ice to your water. Or, if you want to get a little crazy... put 50 cents in a jar (about the cost of a soda) every time you drink an 8oz glass of water. Pick something fun to save up for that costs $20 to $100... and work towards earning it.
Of course, you could just get a spanking every time you fail to drink at least 6 glasses a day. That always helps with motivation!

OK let me chime in here... Studies have shown that unless you have diabeties NO ONE should drink more than one diet soda of any kind a week. Simply put artificial sweetener are not good for you. Your body can't process them properly.
That being said the ever wise and practical ginger has the best advice. just have it near you always. Trust me if your getting spanked for not drinking water, you'll definately get spanked for "Having half empty water bottles," around as well!
I drink 8 oz. every hour while at work. I never feel as good as I do when I have enough water.

Oh, I totally sympathise, I'm USELESS at drinking water.
Or, in fact, drinking full stop. There've been times when it's 9pm at night, and I'll comment to someone I've got a bit of a headache, and their immediate response is "Have you actually had ANY liquid today since you got up?"
To which the answer is sadly often 'No'.

I always have a pot of unsweetened iced tea in the fridge. Easy to make, costs pennies, tastes great, and doesn't rot teeth. (The last is very important for me, a needle phobe who especially hates dentists.)
If you can get Luzianne, it's the best. One giant tea bag makes a whole pot. I've never seen it in the Northeast, but I have a source down south that keeps me supplied.

I love Diet Pepsi and Diet Coke -- and Diet Snapple too. I don't think anything in moderation is all that bad for you -- and diet soda might have some chemicals, but at least it isn't loaded with sugar and calories. What about those ginormous coffee drinks with tons of sugar and whipped cream that people guzzle all day long? Hummpph.
I like Ginger's idea -- I keep a glass or a bottle of water nearby all the time, and sip at it whenever I think to. It's amazing how it's become a habit to do so, and I'm no big fan of water either. -- Erica

Having once dropped a very tarnished old coin into a glass of Coca cola and seen how it came out sparkling clean as if newly minted, I decided I could do without Coke of any sort from then on! Just what does it do to one's inside? I drink water when exercising - probably not as much as I should - and many mugs of tea all day long: (Fair-trade, with semi-skimmed milk and sweetener - not sugar). However, if Pixie not drinking water means more photos like the two after her strapping (I guess it was a strap by the marks) - then go on not drinking Pixie!
I was intrigued to see pyjamas - no panties - but SOCKS! Surely not bed-time attire in the warm climate where you live?
Seems like there is no shortage of people who much prefer soda (or "soft drinks" as we say in the South) to water. My dad (an MD!) likes to say that "water rusts your pipes".
I drink water post work out, but the rest of the time, I can't stomach water without some sort of flavoring agent, such as lemon.
While we are talking about thinks that are bad for you, I encourage you to check out the dangers of di-hydrogen mono oxide.

Dave - I like Propel Fitness water. Very low cal and tasty too ... not as tasty as soda, but close. Next time I'm at Sam's Club I think I'll pick up a case.
Funbun - I'm not being asked, nor do I desire, to give up all sodas. Just trying to incorporate some water. Moderation!
PEH - Not a bad idea. I often workout without any fluid at all (bad, bad, bad ... worse than drinking a soda).
Dr. Ken - Caffeine isn't so much the problem as the fact that I drink diet sodas to the exclusion of all other liquids and also tend to fill up on calorie free, nutrient devoid, fizz. I do not discriminate against any sort of diet soda and A&W Root Beer is one of the best. Just finished a case the other day!
As long as DeSani is something you enjoy, go for it. If you get a teeny bit of added vitamins in that way, then it's an extra bonus. :)
007 – Exactly. To quote that old song Goody Two Shoes “Don’t drink, don’t smoke, what do you do” … I don’t drink alcohol, never smoked, never touched an illegal drug. If the worst that I do is drink too much Diet Coke, I think I’m ahead of the game!
I like the grape and kiwi-strawberry flavors of Propel. I wouldn’t complain if they were dispensed from my fridge either. :)
Steve – I have to agree with you. While I acknowledge that there are healthier choices than soda, opting for a non-alcoholic beverage of any sort given the circumstances is certainly commendable.
Ginger – Yes, I find that I drink more water when it’s bottled than when it’s in a glass. Not sure why. I may try to keep one near by at all times to help with my challenge.

Anonymous – We haven’t made quite such a formal punishment arrangement. No spanking at all was discussed when the challenge was first brought up. I suppose we’ll just see how it goes and if I continue to not meet the goals, I’m sure the ante will be upped each time.
2Good – You’re right about the foods we eat containing water. In fact the average 64 oz of water recommendation (more if you exercise or are out in warm weather) is meant to include the fluid found in food. Of course there is nothing wrong with drinking a little bit more, but that’s why I’d be pleased just to get to 4 – 8 oz. glasses per day. And certainly I like the phrase “have a Coke and a smile”. Must be why I smile a lot. :)

Smallhanded – Red Bull, eh? I’ve never liked the flavor of it, but I was on a Tab Energy kick for a little bit … until I drank too many and felt nauseous. Nothing like feeling like you’re going to hurl to dampen the appeal.
Todd & Suzy – I like a lot of lemon in my water. And then I want to put Equal in it to make it like lemonade. :) Still water though, right? And somehow I have a feeling that I’ll be spanked for insufficient water intake for a while in any case.

Erica – Moderation is key. If I tried to give up all diet sodas for good, I’d probably rebel and end up drinking 2 cases a day. Those giant coffee drinks are like a dessert, or heck, even a meal by the size of some of them. I tried a small one once, bounced off the walls, and then crashed into a crumpled heap of myself. Believe it or not, I think I’d rather have a water.
Maybe I’ll get a cool looking refillable water bottle to keep with me. If so many water-haters can get over their dislike, I’m sure I can too.

Yes, I wore socks. I was quite chilly (before my spanking and then a little while afterwards) that night. Even though it currently still gets warm enough during the day to wear shorts and a t-shirt, at night it drops down to about 40 degrees F (5 degrees C) here and we haven’t yet turned on the heat. Fleece jammies and socks are a must in that weather when you are a frost chicken like me.

Go to your local outdoorsy type store or get online and buy yourself a Camelback bottle. Their hydration backpacks are the best made and so is their water bottle. I take mine everywhere I go and it has really helped me up my water intake. (I do not work for Camelback either)
Well, there's something that may make you enjoy drinking water. In the store were you can buy the individual kool aid, propel, and other powdered flavors. There is a powdered lemon one, and it tastes like you squeezed a whole lemon into the water! I use it in bottles of water and glasses of water...I agree...water if very blah! And to encourage myself to drink water...I don't spend money on anything else :) I save money and am healthier.
Amber think of it like this. A can or bottle of soda is at least 12 oz. Most people can easily drink a can of soda every 2 hours. There-fore drinking a mere 6 oz. of water every hour will certainly not make you "Float away".
I can give you lots of reasons why water is good for you, "especially women", but no more lectures. just please try to drink some water every hour.
So many folks have terrible city water it's no wonder that people don't want to drink it. We are lucky to have a well with excellent mineralized water and the taste is better than bottled.
If you do have city water with chlorine (yuck), try putting some in an open bottle and leave it in the fridge for a while to let the chlorine evaporate.

(They have some neat, little packets of Crystal-light, etc, that you can add to a water bottle. Take one of those on your travels.

poppa - I'm not sure why, but I feel like I slosh when I drink water. Maybe it's so foreign to my body by now that it doesn't know what to do! LOL.
hadenough - we have well water here and there is also a nice natural spring on the other side of the lake here that people come from other towns just to fill up their water bottles. I honestly have no excuse as far as water quality goes. I admit that it tastes good ... well, as good as water can taste. ;-)

Anonymous - Yes, I've made water tasty that way. Sort of like sugar free natural lemonade. But as for it being an appetite suppressant, that's exactly the reason I'm being chided for drinking too much diet soda.
